To the Other Side
The city that never sleeps—Tokyo. Amidst the neon lights, glancing down at my feet, there they were—the little ones, quietly gathered beneath the glow.
From 2023 to 2024, I frequently visited their colonies during the late night to early morning hours, continuing to take photographs. I made every effort not to disturb them. These colonies, scattered primarily around Shinjuku Kabukicho, Ikebukuro North Exit, and Ueno Ameya Yokocho, seemed to have existed for generations. What I witnessed there were their individual personalities—courage, curiosity, wariness, obsession, desire, affection, every emotion.
There was a story between them and people. Though pushed to the margins of human society, they stubbornly survived. Watching human society quietly from the shadows, they seemed almost to carry a one-sided affection for humankind.
And still, to this day, they live among us.
