nearlism — the Photography of Ichi Komatsu
I began this project around 2010.
“nearlism” is the name I gave to my way of photography.
It is about facing each subject with honesty, and through that encounter, drawing closer to its essence.
The word carries echoes of realism and surrealism—the roots of photography—yet it seeks to carve out its own space: near to them, but distinctly personal.
Since childhood, I have wandered through landscapes as if searching for a place of belonging.
The rusted piers of harbor towns, mountain villages wrapped in mist, the back alleys of cities that never fully awaken—each held a quiet presence.
Through many encounters with people along the way, “Nearlism” has grown like a tree, stretching its branches, changing its form, yet continuing to live in silence.
My impulse to photograph always begins with a sense of ending.
For me, to face a subject directly is of the utmost importance, and the moment I confront it through the viewfinder is the happiest and most irreplaceable of times.
Whether it is a person, an animal, or a landscape, the feeling is the same. Each time I press the shutter, I feel myself slowly fade from that place.
What remains is only the presence itself—freed from consciousness.
Based in Tokyo, Nearlism has developed as both a deeply personal project and as a movement and concept.
It is not a fixed style but an evolving framework, seeking its own position within the broader context of contemporary photographic culture.
To all the people, animals, lands, and beings I have encountered through this private endeavor, I offer my deepest respect.
The tree called “Nearlism” still sways in the wind, quietly sprouting new branches.
And beyond these pages, I believe more branches will quietly grow again.
私が自らの写真表現に“nearlism”という呼称を与えてこのプロジェクトを開始したのは2010年ごろのことでした。
"nearlism"──それは被写体と向き合い、そして写真を通じて物事の本質に近づこうとする、わたしの写真活動そのものを示しています。
また、写真の根幹に宿るリアリズムやシュルレアリスムの響きを重ね、それらに近くありながらも独自の表現を目指す想いを込めました。
わたしは幼い頃から空想家で、自分の在り処を求めるように風景を眺め歩くことが好きでした。港町の錆びた桟橋、霧に包まれた山間の集落、眠りから醒めぬ都市の裏道──そこに漂う気配。
以来、多くの人々との関わりの中で、“nearlism”というプロジェクトは一本の樹のように枝を伸ばし、形を変えながらも、静かに成長を続けています。
撮影の衝動は、いつも"終わりの予感"から生まれます。
私にとって、被写体と真っ直ぐに向き合うことはとても大切にしていることであり、ファインダーを通して被写体と対峙するその瞬間は最も幸福でかけがえのない時間です。それがたとえ人であっても、動物や風景であっても撮影に向かう気持ちは変わりません。
そして、シャッターを切るたびに私は少しずつその場から消えていくような感覚を覚えます。そこに残るのは、意識から解き放たれた確かな存在のみです。
東京を拠点とし、これまで私が取り組んできた "nearlism" は個人的なプロジェクトであると同時に、ひとつの movement / concept としても展開しています。それは固定化されたスタイルではなく、進化を続ける枠組みとして現代における写真文化の文脈のなかにおいて、独自の位置を見出そうとしています。
この私的なプロジェクトを通じて出会った人々や動物、土地、そしてすべての存在に心からの敬意を捧げます。
“nearlism”という名の樹はいまも風に揺れながら、新たな枝を芽吹かせています。
この頁を閉じたその先でも、また新しい枝が静かに伸びていくことでしょう。
